shock Owls

HOUSTON -- Paul Yap's bases-loaded single in the seventh inning provided the tying and winning runs, lifting Hawaii-Hilo to a 3-2 win over Rice in a Western Athletic Conference game yesterday afternoon at Reckling Park.

Yap hit a 3-2, two-out pitch from losing pitcher Jon Skaggs through the middle to score Justin Kaneshiro and Dana McCracken.

Thomas Ford, a senior left hander, struck out five and picked up his fourth complete game victory of the season. The Vulcans (14-22, 5-12 WAC) ended a four-game losing streak. The Owls (19-18, 7-9) had won three in row.

The series ends with the third game today at 4 p.m. HST.
