SAN JOSE, Calif. -- At the halfway point of the Western Athletic Conference baseball season, the euphoria of first place is a thing of the past for the University of Hawaii.

The San Jose State Spartans completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Rainbows with an 11-2 victory at Municipal Stadium yesterday. The 0-3 road trip left Hawaii three games out of first place and in danger of falling into the league's second division.

Ever since winning two of three games at Fresno State March 17-19, the Rainbow hitters have been inconsistent, especially with men in scoring position. It all started when the Spartans won the series at Rainbow Stadium, March 24-26, and continued through the Rainbow Easter Tournament.

This weekend, in 27 innings against SJSU pitching, the Rainbows scored in just three innings.

Yesterday, the 'Bows had a great opportunity to send Spartan starter Tim Adinolfi to the showers in the third inning. Hawaii had scored two runs on four hits and had the bases loaded with one out.

But Adinolfi wiggled out of the situation by getting Brian Bock on a medium deep fly ball that center fielder Chris Bruckner turned into a double play by throwing out Scooter Martines at home.

UH starter Rich Snider did not have the same good fortune in the fourth inning when the Spartans scored a run on three hits, then loaded the bases on a walk to Brian Stream with one out.

Bruckner followed with a bases-clearing double to left-center field. Then he scored when UH reliever Manuel Olivera threw consecutive wild pitches.

The UH bullpen didn't fare much better in the fifth and seventh as San Jose State took advantage of walks and hit batters to score three runs in each inning.
