Get dirty at Swamp Romp

If you like your outdoor activities down and dirty, head to the 6th annual Swamp Romp April 29 at Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe Bay.

Companies, businesses, schools, athletic teams and other groups are invited to enter a six-member team to take part in a 5 mile obstacle course with barriers, climbing walls, marshes and plenty of mud.

Last year, more than 170 teams signed up for the event.

The entry fee per team is $72. Teams must sign up in advance and each member will receive a Swamp Romp tank top. Rompers must wear utility/long trousers or sweat pants and some kind of boots. No tennis shoes.

Teams will be ranked in six categories according to members' cumulative ages, from 120 years and under, to 211 years and older. Mixed teams must include three men and three women.

Call the base Athletics Office at 254-7590 or 254-7591 to register. Sign up before April 23 to avoid a late fee. Proceeds for the event will benefit recreation programs for Hawaii's Marines and families.

'Love Letters' for women

Writer and motivator Ken Armstrong will be offering women a "life-changing workshop" for women called "Love Letters."

Through humor, compassion and practical tips, Armstrong will discuss the importance of fulfilling yourself by meeting your own expectations, not those of others.

The event runs 9 a.m. to noon April 29 in the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Grand Salon. The cost is $35 with advance reservations.

Women like Janet Bender, executive director for the Alzheimer's Association Hawaii chapter, vouch for Armstrong's qualifications in dealing with the topic of women's self-image. "He has transcended the one-upmanship games that men and women play in relationships," she said. "He shares a splendid collection of 'Love Letters' that encourage women to throw away the yardstick and the need to be measured."

For information, call 593-3727.

Escada show set

Escada's Autumn/Winter 2000 Collection will be featured when the Japanese Women's Society hosts its 25th annual luncheon fashion show.

The event will take place May 7, beginning with a 10:15 a.m. performance of the Hawaii Suzuki Strings, followed by the noon lunch and fashion show.

Tickets are $45. Call Suzette Lau Hee at 524-0450 or Gail Yamashita at 626-1359.
