Luck skips
a generation

WHEN he finally got his first hole-in-one after literally thousands of rounds of top notch golf, Al Souza Jr.'s accomplishment was duly noted in this space. Now he's done it again, but only after he nearly got a "son-in-one." Seems Souza and former NHL player T.J. Gorence ran over faithful follower Al Souza III while driving their golf cart. He escaped serious injury, luckily enough, and papa proved even luckier Mug shotwhen he then proceeded to hit his second hole-in-one ever, with his son living to witness it. The celebration continued with drinks in the clubhouse and on into the wee hours of the morning at Aaron's atop the Ala Moana Hotel where the Hall of Fame golfer is a partner ...

WHEN Michael Maguire was here as one of the stars of "Bravo Broadway" with the Honolulu Pops, he told the sold-out audience at the Concert Hall that he and his colleagues were having such a nice stay at the Halekulani they promised not to steal any towels. Apparently nobody told him about Arsenio Hall. When Hall hosted his own talk show he returned from vacation, and in his opening monologue stared directly into the camera and said, "Halekulani, I confess -- I stole your towels." Hotel G.M. Pat Tam and her staff were so grateful for the national coverage they sent him a monogrammed Halekulani robe with a note stating it was "probably too bulky to fit into your suitcase with the towels." ...

We wuz Robbed

WHEN developer John Spierling opened up the April Robb Report, he was ecstatic to see that Waimea on the Big Island was named one of the 10 best places in the world to live. He and Rick Rainalter are developing a pricey subdivision in Waimea and figured this might spur sales. Then he noticed an accompanying photo of a calm and peaceful Waimea Bay -- the one on Oahu -- which accompanied the story and he was bummed out until I mentioned that if potential buyers thought there was such an idyllic beach nearby his conclave, it might cause some Johnny dot-com Lately to fork over cash sight unseen. Suddenly, Spierling was feeling much better ...

IS it just me, or does everyone get the idea that the Royal Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry "close out sale" has been going on for about a year now with no sign of slowing (or closing) down? Not since the Thomasville Furniture Store had a "going out of business" sale that seemed it would never end have we had such a lengthy campaign. In that case, a bankruptcy judge finally forced them to go out of business, shifting their reorganization plan into Chapter 7 bankruptcy ...

IF you haven't seen "Fame" yet, there's a matinee at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Concert Hall with all seats $35 and an opportunity to ask questions of the cast after the show ...

Friendly Borders

THE UH Community Colleges had long ago set aside April 8 and 15 as its "Awareness Day" at Borders, so when the company's community relations coordinator, Les Honda, called to ask if they'd share the spotlight with someone else at the Ward Centre store on Friday, there was some hesitation. They they learned they'd be sharing the day with former Gov. John A. Burns, and all was just fine. It was Burns who, in 1964, signed the act creating the community college system in the state. Dan Boylan will be on hand talking about his new Burns biography from 2 to 3 p.m. with the UCC'ers there from noon to 4 ...
