Moanalua had its racing shoes on last night at Leilehua, and the Menehunes ran over the host Mules 69-49 in a battle of unbeaten Oahu Interscholastic Association West girls' basketball teams.

Led by seniors Mayumi Stevens and Kimberlee Morikawa, the Menehunes (6-0) used team speed to race up and down the court, scoring fast-break baskets and earning trips to the free-throw line.

"The girls seem to be in their element when they run and it seems to be fun for them," Moanalua coach Dana Dias said.

Stevens scored a game-high 17 points.

"We run a lot of transition in practice," she said. "Every time we work on fast breaks."

The Menehunes started quickly, forcing turnovers with pressure defense and scoring in transition.

Moanalua went on an 11-0 run to start the second quarter, opening up a 28-8 lead.

The Menehunes were efficient at the free-throw line, hitting 16-of-22 foul shots in the first half and 23-of-30 for the game.

"As a small team, we're going to drive a lot and go to the free- throw line a lot," Stevens said.

Chandel Santella added 12 points and Shelley Salie 10 more for Moanalua.

Kayla Kahuli led Leilehua (5-1) with 13 points.

"This team's never been 5-0, it's a new thing for them," Leilehua coach Buz Vasper said. "This was a good learning experience for them."
