Prep Athletes of the Week

The Mules' slugger went 6-for-7 with two doubles as Leilehua improved to 3-0 with OIA West victories over Waipahu and Nanakuli.

The forward averaged 10 points a game and played strong defense as the Mules ran their OIA West record to 5-0 with wins over Waianae and Aiea.


Prep Honor Roll

Outstanding performers in high school sports last week include:

BASEBALL

Bullet Ikaika Upchurch, Mid-Pacific: Made several outstanding plays at shortstop and hit a 10th-inning, two-run triple that proved the difference in the Owls' 8-6 victory over St. Louis on Tuesday.

Bullet Guy McDowell and Sean Paiva, St. Louis: The sophomore and senior combined to no-hit University/Hawaii Baptist on Thursday. In the Crusaders' 15-0 win, McDowell, making his first start, struck out eight batters in four innings. Paiva pitched an inning, with one strikeout.

Bullet David Kurahashi, McKinley: Pitched a two-hit shutout in the Tigers' OIA opener against Kalani.

Bullet Tyler Perkins, Kamehameha: Went 3-for-3 with a home run in the Warriors' win over Mid-Pacific, and hit a homer over the center field fence in a victory over Punahou.

Bullet Kahi Kaanoi, Kamehameha: Pitched two complete games and went 2-0 for the Warriors. Fired a four-hitter against Punahou. Struck out 13 batters in the wins.

Bullet Josh Jones, Leilehua: Pitched a one-hitter in the Mules' 9-0 win over Waipahu. The junior southpaw gave up only a first-inning single. He struck out 12 and walked two. Jones also starred at the plate, ripping a home run, triple and single and knocking in two runs.

Bullet Dane Marcouiller, Mid-Pacific: Banged out three hits, including a solo home run, and knocked in a pair of runs in MPI's come-from-behind win over Punahou.

Bullet Cheyne Todani, Leilehua: Hit a grand slam in the sixth inning Friday to help the Mules beat Nanakuli, 12-7.

BASKETBALL

Bullet April Atuaia, Kahuku: Scored 21 and 15 points, respectively, as the Red Raiders beat Kaimuki and Kaiser in OIA East play.

Bullet Kimberlee Morikawa, Moanalua: The senior nailed five-of-five 3-pointers and totalled a season-high 24 points in a win over Nanakuli.

Bullet Monica Tokoro, Iolani: Led the Raiders to victory against Maryknoll with a 21-point effort.

Bullet Alana Kaupu, Molokai: Scored 20 and 15 points as the Farmers split a pair of games against Lanai in the MIL.

Bullet Traci Torralva, McKinley: Led the Tigers to a win against Farrington by scoring 18 points. She also scored 14 points in a loss to Castle.

Bullet Jodi Nakashima, Roosevelt: The junior shooting guard drained two key 3-pointers and totalled 18 points in a win against Kaiser. She also scored nine of her 19 points in the fourth quarter of a win over Castle.

Bullet Becky Hogue, Punahou: The freshman center continued to rack up points, scoring 22 in a win against University.

Bullet Nicole Furtado, Kalaheo: The sharpshooter hit seven 3-pointers in two games against Kailua and Farrington.

GOLF

Bullet Blaine Lee and Grant Yasui, Pearl City: Led the Chargers to their second straight OIA team title. Lee shot a 1 over par, 73, and Yasui fired a 78, while battling the flu, at Waialae Country Club on Friday.

Bullet Ayumi Hori, Moanalua: Shot a 76 at Waialae Country Club to lead the Moanalua girls' squad to a sudden-death playoff win over Radford to capture the OIA team crown.

Bullet Eleanor and Angela Apelu, Radford: The sisters finished second and third, respectively, in the OIA championship. Eleanor fired a 77 and Angela totalled an 86.

TRACK AND FIELD

Bullet Vera Simms, Mililani: The senior won two events at a meet Friday and two more Saturday. At Mililani on Friday, she won the long jump by more than a foot (15-2) and the 200 meter dash. At Punahou on Saturday, she won the 100 high hurdles and 300 long hurdles.

Bullet Ty Jarrett, Pearl City: Won three events at the Open Meet: 110 high hurdles (16.3), 100 meter dash (11.4) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.2).

Bullet Orion Wilson, Pearl City: Won the high jump event at the Open Meet with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches, and won the 400 meter dash by more than two seconds (61.9).
