Splashing fun and
‘Foolishness’

EVERY April 1 a group of well-heeled buddies get together for a benefit "April Foolish Day" party on the Falls of Clyde. Well, if you were awake on Saturday, you know that's when the rains came down, and there they were, some of the town's most stylish ladies, all gathered in their newly purchased designer attire, soaked to the skin with no where to run to, no where to hide ... Alan Beall has Mug shothis own foolishness in mind when he stages his annual birthday party April 11 at the Row Bar in Restaurant Row. It's also the bar's 12th anniversary, and since he's calling it a "Mad Hatter's Birthday," guests are asked to wear a hat, the tallest, ugliest and funniest all winning prizes. I remember sitting with Beall on one of the bar stools at the Row Bar before it opened, and when he asked what I thought, I said, "It feels like a John Deere tractor seat." It still does, a bit, though at my suggestion he reluctantly had padded cushions designed for them ...

AND speaking of foolishness, did you happen to notice that it was Three Stooges day Saturday, with hilarious two-reeler after two-reeler unspooled for the TV audience on AMC. The only unfunny thing about it were the appearances of lame comics Leslie Nielson and Carrot Top trying to be funny between episodes. One segment brought back a memory. Listed as cowboy lead in an Old West episode was Jock O'Mahoney. This, of course, was the stunt man/actor who appeared variously as "Jack," "Jock," "Jocko" and "Jacques" with "Mahoney" and "O'Mahoney" frequently interchanged. He starred in various westerns and as Tarzan, and when his career began to wind down, moved to Hawaii to be G.M. of Paradise Park in Hawaii. Mahoney, who died 10 years ago, was the stepfather of actress Sally Field ...

Super chefs

ASK chef D.K. Kodama what the D.K. stands for and he'll answer, "Don't Know." But he does know sushi as demonstrated at his award-winning Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar on Maui. He's opening an Oahu version of the eatery next month, but will preview what's to come when he does a free cooking demo at Liberty House Ala Moana at noon April 15 ... Chef Russell Siu had a busy March. He moved his Kakaako Kitchen to Ward Centre, got married to Malia Ho at the Kea Lani on Maui, took one day off and began working both the new eatery at breakfast and lunch, while cooking dinner at his 3660 on the Rise for two weeks straight. He took off last week for New York to be guest chef at the James Beard House with his bride, and has scheduled a two-week honeymoon in France ...

WHEN artist Nicole Seu married Joe ("The Great") Dane at the Academy of Arts, the bride and her bridesmaids added an island touch by donning matching (but stylish) rubber slippers with their traditional wedding garb. Two guests, Missy Seu and Russell Pang, felt pangs of deja vu -- they were flower girl and ring bearer, respectively, at the wedding of Nicole's parents 30 years ago ...

Bad break

IT was a terribly bad break for Keoki Lake, the Canadian steel guitarist who was on the first stop of a tour that would have taken him to the Cook Islands and New Zealand. After making just two guest appearances locally, Lake fell on a slippery sidewalk outside his Waikiki hotel and broke his wrist, a potential career ending injury. He had to return home for surgery ...
