McKinley girls

defense to defeat
Farrington
Special to the Star-BulletinUsually, when a basketball player gives up 22 points, it's a negative.
But in the case of McKinley freshman Amber Lee last night, it meant success.
Lee, starting in place of injured senior Michel Swenson-Suan, was assigned the task of guarding Farrington's star center, Robynn Afe.
Except for a bunch of hoops with the game already decided, Lee contained Afe, and the host Tigers beat the Governors, 54-38.
McKinley, ranked eighth in the state, improved to 2-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association's East. Farrington fell to 2-2.
"Lee is such a young girl, she doesn't even know who Afe is," Tigers' coach Jesse Victorino said. "She's 14 and we wanted to bring her along slowly. It's just that you cannot bring her along slowly in a game like this with Afe sitting in the key. But we were really impressed and really happy with the way she played."
Afe had only 14 points with under three minutes remaining in the game.
Lee's tough play against Afe was part of a strong overall defensive effort, as none of the other Governors scored more than six points.
McKinley's offense was also impressive, save for some difficulties with Farrington's press. The Tigers got many open looks and made them count. Traci Torralva's 18 points and Amber Ehia's 16 led the way.
"Coach told us to be patient and run our plays, and we would get our shots off," Torralva said. "After our loss to Castle on Tuesday, we wanted to show tonight that McKinley is back on top."
No. 2-ranked Kalaheo, which hosts Kailua tonight, still leads the OIA East at 3-0. McKinley, which is among four teams a game or less back, hosts Kalani tonight.
The Governors visit Roosevelt on Tuesday.
