Spartans
vanquish VulcansSan Jose State's Joey Baker got the better of Hawaii-Hilo's Thomas Ford in a Western Athletic Conference pitchers' duel last night as the Spartans defeated the Vulcans, 4-2, at Hilo's Wong Stadium.
The second game of a three-game series unfolded in stark contrast to the 27-hit, error-laden opener, won by the Spartans, 17-7. Both teams tightened up on defense and got solid pitching, Baker finishing with a six-hitter and eight strikeouts to win for the fifth time in nine decisions.
Ford (3-3) allowed four hits and two earned runs in six innings-plus. He was lifted in the seventh with none out, two runners on base and the game tied, 2-2.
Reliever Joe Bell got two outs before Tony Tognetti's grounder skipped over the glove of UHH shortstop Brandon Chaves and both runners scored.
The Spartans (20-10, 7-4 WAC) and Vulcans (13-20, 4-10) were to play the series finale today at Kailua-Kona.
