Adam Shorsher hit a home run and three doubles, driving in six runs, as San Jose State drilled Hawaii-Hilo, 17-7, last night in the opener of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Hilo. Chris Key pitched five innings to pick up his seventh victory without a loss for the Spartans (19-9, 6-4 WAC), who broke the game wide open with six runs in the eighth inning, Shorsher doubling in the last two.
UH-Hilo starter Kaholo Rickard was cuffed for seven hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings, falling to 4-4.
The Vulcans (13-19, 4-9 WAC) hurt themselves with five errors and their pitchers hit five San Jose State batters.
The teams combined for 27 hits, 16 of them by the Spartans.
