The Navy yesterday dedicated 72 two-bedroom enlisted quarters -- the first of five complexes that will eventually house 452 junior enlisted members.

The new replacement units are located in the Navy's Hale Moku housing area near Pearl Harbor and is a joint venture of Harper Construction, a California-based company; Nielsen-Dillingham, operating out of Nevada; and Hawaii's Hawaiian Dredging Co.

Originally, there were 318 units in the Hale Moku complex located off of Kamehameha Highway. The $56 million redevelopment project will add 134 new units -- all with 950 feet of living space, central air conditioning, solar water heaters and full-size washers and dryers.

Wahiawa resident William Street never got the second Silver Star -- the country's fourth highest award -- he earned in Vietnam until this week.

Street, a corporal attached to the Army's 25th Infantry Division, was working as the lead element of his platoon in a rice paddy near Trung Lap in South Vietnam on Oct. 7, 1968. Although seriously wounded, Street led his squad to safety while laying down heavy fire on the enemy.

His actions, the Army said, eliminated an enemy position, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. He also was awarded a Purple Heart for his actions.

He was a member of company B, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry. Evacuated to Hawaii, Street received award orders while recuperating, but was never formally presented the medals.
