Rainbows throw
block party in quick
sweep of Aztecs

SAN DIEGO -- Brenton Davis put down 14 kills and was in on nine of 16 team blocks as the sixth-ranked University of Hawaii men's volleyball team swept San Diego State, 15-3, 15-9, 15-7, last night at Peterson Gym.

The Rainbows needed just 74 minutes to win their third consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match and improve to 13-8 overall, 8-6 in the MPSF.

The Aztecs dropped to 4-15 and 2-14.

"Everyone played well,'' said Hawaii coach Mike Wilton. "We didn't hack around, didn't lower our level of play.

"It gave us a good opportunity for us to play a lot of people and we were happy with the results.''

Wilton used 10 of his 11 players. Junior hitter Clay Stanley sat out "and that had been predetermined. Clay will be sharing time with Torry (Tukuafu) and Costas (Theocharidis).''

Stanley will be used in tonight's rematch with San Diego State.

Theocharidis finished with 14 kills and Tukuafu 13. Davis hit .765 with just one error in 17 swings as Hawaii hit .500 as a team.

The Rainbows outblocked the Aztecs, 16-4. UH also had an 8-5 advantage in aces.

Mike Szymanski led San Diego State with 14 kills and Jed Stotsenberg added 10.
