Giant washes up
on Big Island
By Ken Love, West Hawaii Today
Visitors to Hawaii's Kohala Coast view what officials
estimate to be a 30-ton adult humpback whale that washed
ashore Sunday night. People could see the carcass yesterday,
though beaches along the coast were closed as sharks ravaged
the remains. The whale's baleen is seen at lower left. Marine
scientists from the University of Hawaii at Hilo are hoping
they can salvage the skeleton for educational purposes.
