Stan Sheriff’s
son dies

Mike Sheriff, son of the late University of Hawaii athletic director, Stan Sheriff, died yesterday at Queen's Hospital. He was 39.

Mike Sheriff died of a massive stroke. He had been battling cancer for six months.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Stan Sheriff died in 1993 of a heart attack.

Pro boxing tomorrow

A medalist from the 1996 Olympics headlines the seven-bout professional boxing card tomorrow night at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Siarhey Liakhovich won a silver medal for Russia in Atlanta. He is 8-0 as a professional and meets Everett "Bigfoot" Martin, who is 20-26, in an 8-round heavyweight match.

The main event pits Andy Tabanas of the Philippines (36-4) against Wonder Boy of Indonesia (24-4) at 108 pounds for 10 rounds.

Dustin Kim's (12-0) is the biggest of several local names. He takes on Frangky Mamuaya of Indonesia (24-6) at 127 pounds, scheduled for eight rounds.

Tickets are $25, $50 and $100 and are available at Tickets Plus locations as well as the hotel. The $100 tickets include a banquet that begins at 5 p.m. The first fight is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Volleyball team hits road

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team, fresh off two weekend sweeps of Stanford, goes to San Diego for matches on four consecutive nights this week.

Hawaii plays San Diego State tomorrow and Wednesday and then visits UC San Diego on Thursday and Friday.

All four matches count in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings. The Rainbows are 12-8 overall and 7-6 in the MPSF.

Bartlett, Tresnak top duo

Kai Bartlett and Karel Tresnak Jr. teamed up in the one-person canoe division to win the Canoe Sports/Outrigger Connection Coastal Relay yesterday.

Bartlett and Tresnak completed the 34-mile course from Kailua Bay to Magic Island in 4 hours, 30 minutes and 53 seconds.

The defending championship duo of Mark Rigg and Marc Haine placed second in 4:37:12. Kealii Paaina and Andrew Penny were third in 4:38:10.

The women's division winners were Ilena Chong and Amanda Pytlarz (5:22:31). Ine Bogart and Chris Miller won the mixed division in 4:49:17.

The two-person relay team of Kristen Lass, Cynthia Ricciardelli and Katie Slocumb finished in 4:47:04.

Waipahu takes AJA title

Lance Fukumitsu went 3-for-5 and Syd Kirimaka drove in two runs as Waipahu defeated Sheridan, 6-4, yesterday in the Oahu AJA Senior League championship game at Hans L'Orange Park.

The victory sends Waipahu into the State AJA title tournament April 8-9 on Maui.

Wahine host golf tourney

The University of Hawaii women's golf team will host the 15th Annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Wahine Invitational tomorrow through Thursday, at the Olomana Golf Course in Waimanalo.

The tourney is a 54-hole stroke play event. No. 3 Southern Cal No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 9 Oklahoma State, and No. 20 Oklahoma are part of the 13-team field.

Cinco de Mayo boxing

The Army Hawaii Cinco de Mayo Boxing Championships are scheduled for May 4-5 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Martinez Physical Fitness Center, Schofield Barracks.

All nonregistered fighters - men and women - on active duty are eligible to compete.

The entry deadline is April 14.

Fighters must have a minimum of 20 hours of supervised training. The training sessions will run from April 19 to May 2.

There will be an organizational meeting at 6 p.m., Friday, April 14, at Martinez Center.

Tennis clinics scheduled

Tennis tune-up clinics will be conducted at several Oahu sites from April 1 to May 13. They are free for USTA members and cost $3 for nonmembers. Registration is required 48 hours in advance.

The clinics calendar: April 1 at Keehi Lagoon; April 8 at Keehi Lagoon, Lehua and Waipahu; April 15 at Kalakaua; May 6 at Waipahu and Kaneohe; May 13 at Keehi Lagoon and Kailua.

HPU game rained out

Yesterday's baseball game between Hawaii Pacific and Lewis-Clark State at Hans L'Orange Park was rained out in the second inning. Due to scheduling conflicts, it will not be replayed.

The Sea Warriors are scheduled to play their last two home games of the season against San Jose State tomorrow and Lewis-Clark State Wednesday.

Both contests are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Hans L'Orange.

Team Kempo medals

A team of martial artists from Hawaii competed with much success at the recent Tiger Balm Internationals in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Team Kempo Unlimited - consisting of Tommy Lam, Sheldon Tokuda, Todd Nakamura and Steven Lau - brought home a total of seven medals: one gold, three silver and three bronze. The four each competed in their respective divisions in the format of Sport Jiu-jitsu (freestyle sparring mixed with grappling) and continuous sparring.

The Tiger Balm Internationals is an annual event drawing top competitors from around the world.

Triathlon at Waikoloa

The International Triathlon Union Healing Island World Cup, the lone Olympic qualifying event in Hawaii, will be held Saturday at the Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island.

The race consists of a 1.5K swim in Anaeho'omalu Bay, a 40K bike race and 10K run.

Triathlon will be an Olympic demonstration sport at this year's Sydney Games.

Special hotel rates are available at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach.

Super sailing in July

The fourth annual Asahi Super Cup, a five-day sailing competition in the waters off Waikiki, will be held July 20-24.

Registration, a skippers meeting and a welcome party at Waikiki Yacht Club on July 20.

Races 1 and 2 are set for July 21, a third, long-distance race for July 22 and races 4 and 5 for July 23.

There will be an awards banquet on July 24 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.
