Numbers decide

Oscarama
Star-BulletinFifteen readers who entered our Oscarama contest were right on all counts in picking last night's Academy Award winners. That means picking the winner for our contest boiled down to our final tie-breaker, how many ballots would the newspaper receive? The answer was 882. And so we pulled out the calculator to determine the recipients of this year's Oscarama prizes.
Nira Tom of Aina Haina took first place of $500, and we found her at work at Palolo Chinese Home. "I like family movies, and we rent a lot," she said.
Husband Richard Tom confirmed this. "Oh, she has the memory in the family. She remembers the names of all the actors and actresses and what movies they're in. She loves the movies."
In second place, a family effort from Jill and Brenda Lumeng of Kailua turned up a winning entry worth $250. "There are seven of us in the family and we go to movies all the time," said Jill. "And we rent a lot too.
"I didn't see all the movies last year, but I did see 'American Beauty' and I was really struck by it," she added. "It's quite a movie!"
And in third place, our $100 winner is Wahiawa's Herbert Takabayashi, who entered in his mother Kazuyo's name. "I only like to watch good movies," he insisted. "Walt Disney -- not just the animated films -- war movies, that kind. I always watched the movies here in Wahiawa, except for the years I lived in Chicago. Chicago has some real good theaters."
