tourney openersThe University of Hawaii softball team set a Bank of Hawaii Invitational tournament record for home runs yesterday with three en route to an 8-4 victory over Nittaidai University of Japan.
In the last of five opening-day games, the Wahine fell to Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education, 6-5, at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
In other games yesterday, No. 12 Oregon State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge Nittaidai, 8-7, and Tokyo Women's College broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the top of the ninth to top Loyola Marymount, 4-1.
Also, Corrianne Rogalsky and Lucy Wood combined on a one-hitter in Loyola Marymount's 8-0 shutout of Nicholls State. And Crystal Draper stuck out nine and held Nicholls State to one hit in Oregon State's 5-0 victory.
Hawaii 8, Nittaidai 4:
The Wahine's 12-hit attack included home runs by Dana Degen, Demetria Costa and Sheri Oronoz.Degen drove in three runs in the game, two on a bases-loaded double in the first inning that helped Hawaii to a 3-1 lead.
Desiree Duran pitched a complete game, surrendering just two earned runs and scattering seven hits.
Tokyo WCPE 6, Hawaii 5:
Tokyo used a four-run third to take a 5-2 lead then held off a last-inning threat by the Wahine.Hawaii loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but couldn't take advantage as Oronoz flied out to left to end the game.
