Gina Camacho, 8, above, tried on the "Sunlight Protector," created
by Michael Hendrix, during Mililani Middle School's Invention
Convention yesterday. Below is Jasmine Larkin, 12, and her
"Global Positioning System pet collar," which won first place in
the general category of the event. Students at the school were
encouraged to come up with "useful inventions for everyday life,"
principal Roger Kim said. Taking first place in the environmental
category was Chelsea Akamine, 11, who invented a
"compost trash can."
