commercialization
bill killed
Star-BulletinThe Senate Economic Development Committee has killed a House bill that would have allowed commercialization at two boat harbors.
Chairwoman Sen. Lorraine Inouye said there were "problems with poor management."
Inouye suggested the Department of Land and Natural Resources work with the people in the Ala Wai area.
Recreational boater Reg White said the decision was fair.
"By what they did, that set the stage for progress with the Department of Land and Natural Resources to work together to find a solution that's good for the people," said White.
Sen. Sam Slom strongly opposed the deferment of the bill.
"When you say something is deferred, even though that's the intention, that may not be the result," said Slom (R, Kalama Valley, Aina Haina).
House Bill 2571 House Draft 1 would allow commercialization at Ala Wai and Keehi harbor. Gov. Ben Cayetano said yesterday the two harbors have the most potential for commercial use.
Ala Wai boat harbor resident Richard Stead said, "If it is privatized, it becomes a Disneyland."
George Watts, resident of the Ilikai apartments, said, "This is going to be a continuing battle."
House defers resolutions to purchase land parcels
The House Water and Land Use Committee has deferred two resolutions urging the state to acquire two parcels of land to maintain the cultural integrity of the site.Charles "Chipper" Wichman, director of Limahuli Garden, said, "If we lose these cultural resources, there are a few, if any, that are like this."
House Concurrent Resolution 31 and House Resolution 37 call for acquisition of the parcels near the Limahuli Stream on Kauai for Ha'ena State Park.
