Kalaheo too
much for Kaiser

Kaiser had a good start. But Kalaheo had Brandy Richardson.

The Mustangs' 5-foot-11 junior forward poured in 31 points, leading the defending Oahu Interscholastic Association girls' basketball champions past the host Cougars, 52-16, in the OIA East opener for both teams.

PREP EXTRA While the final score doesn't indicate it, Kaiser was in it for awhile. The Cougars scored nearly half their points in the first three minutes, and led 7-4 at 5:02 of the first quarter.

But Richardson scored eight of Kalaheo's first nine points, including a tip-in at 2:48 of the first that made it 9-7, giving the Mustangs their only lead, one they would never give up.

Richardson, the Star-Bulletin's Ms. Basketball Hawaii last year, outscored Kaiser, 14-0, for 15:17 of game-time from early in the second quarter to early in the fourth.

Chico Furtado, coach of No. 2-ranked Kalaheo, wasn't totally satisfied with his team's effort on the attack.

"Offensively we struggled. We couldn't get anything going offensively except for Brandy," Furtado said. "But our defense from the second quarter on was very good."

Richardson said Kaiser's pressing and zone defense took Kalaheo a little by surprise.

"We didn't get much ball movement and we needed that to get a good shot," she said. "If we have a slow start like that against Kamehameha or Punahou, we might not be able to come back."

It might seem early to be thinking about possible state tournament opponents.

But as long as the Mustangs have Richardson, it's probably a safe assumption they'll make it there.

"We've got some quick girls, and I think they were trying a little too hard," Kaiser coach Lisa Mann said of Kalaheo's early woes. "Obviously, they settled down. And Brandy is unstoppable. She's strong, she's fast, she can jump and she can shoot."

Samantha Ching led the Cougars with five points.

Kalaheo improved to 11-2 overall, while Kaiser fell to 4-4.
