David Evans, Brigham Young-Hawaii's record-setting senior guard, doubled up on national honors yesterday. Evans named
All-AmericanEvans became the first men's basketball player from Hawaii to earn NCAA Division II All-America first team honors. The 6-foot-6 Evans led Division II in scoring this past season, averaging 28 points per game.
He also was named to the GTE Academic All-America team. The physical education major has a 3.58 grade-point average.
Evans finished his four-year career as the all-time leading scorer for the Seasiders with 2,053 points. He also set school records for most points in a game (48) and season (782).
200th victory for Porter
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team gave head coach Dave Porter his 200th career win yesterday when the Seasiders shut out Pacific University, 9-0, on the Laie campus courts.Since taking over the BYUH program in 1992, Porter's teams have gone 200-12. Yesterday's win over the Division III Boxers was the 51st consecutive for the Seasider women's team.
The BYUH men's team also defeated Pacific, 9-0, yesterday.
WAC honors to UH's Holma
Petra Holma, a senior on the University of Hawaii women's tennis team, was named the Western Athletic Conference's Player of the Week.Holma was undefeated in singles competition last week in six matches. She and Jennifer Oshita had a 3-2 record in doubles.
Wahine host Invitational
The University of Hawaii softball team looks to get back on the winning track with this week's13th Bank of Hawaii Invitational at the Rainbow Wahine Stadium.The four-day, six-team event opens tomorrow with the 2 p.m. game between Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education and No. 12 Oregon State. Nittaidai of Japan and Loyola Marymount meet in the 4 p.m. game with the Wahine facing Nicholls State in a 6 p.m. game to be televised live on KFVE (Channel 5).
No. 22 Hawaii (9-9) went 1-4 at last week's Kia Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. One of the losses was to the Beavers, a team the Wahine will play on Saturday at 7 p.m
The tournament continues through Sunday's 5 p.m. title contest. Play begins at 9 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Kapalua names Collins
Stephen Collins has been appointed Golf Courses Superintendent by Kapalua Land Company.He will be responsible for overseeing conditioning and maintenance of the three championship golf courses at Kapalua, as well as the Kapalua Golf Academy.
Collins joined Kapalua last October at Interim Golf Courses Superintendent in preparation for the Mercedes Championships, an official PGA Tour event held at Kapalua.
UH golfers finish 12th
Scott Carlyle shot a 54-hole score of 218 to tie for 15th place in the individual standings and lead the University of Hawaii men's golf team to a 12th-place finish in the Oregon Duck Invitational, which wound up yesterday at Eugene, Ore.
Rally for track program
To show support for adding a women's track and field program at the University of Hawaii, a rally will be held on March 29 beginning at 5:30 p.m.at Cooke Field.For information, contact Tom Peterson at 732-4920.
Culinary benefit golf
The third annual Hale Aina Golf Tournament, a benefit for Hawaii's culinary arts, will be played on April 17 at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club, starting at 10 a.m. with hole-in-one, long drive, chipping and putting contests for cash and prizes.The tournament, a four-person scramble, tees off at noon. After it ends, a party and awards ceremony hosted by Westin Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki Executive Chef Goran Streng will feature tasting booths catered by top isle chefs.
The cost is $200 per player or $800 for a team of four. Players are asked to register by April 3.
