Nene childrens book
awards on FridayAward-winning children's author Barbara Robinson will be the speaker, and will announce the winners of the 2000 Nene Award and Nene Honor Book Award, at 9:30 a.m. Friday at McKinley High School auditorium.
The Nene Award is presented annually to the book voted the favorite among Hawaii's children in grades 4 through 6. The Nene Honor Book Award is presented to the runner-up. Nearly 9,4000 children voted at 128 libraries.
Robinson was the 1999 Nene Award winner for "The Best School Year Ever," which also won awards in several other states. An Ohio native, Robinson has written a number of books for children, including the critically acclaimed, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!" and "My Brother Louis Measures Worms."
Winners of the children's essay-writing and poster contests also will be honored Friday. The winners will read aloud their essays, based on the theme, "If I met Barbara Robinson, I would tell her...." and posters will be on display.
Winners of the essay contest are Kelsey Sakimoto, grade 4, Liholiho Elementary School; Ualani Davis, grade 5, Liliuokalani; and Kimi Matsushima, grade 6, Kaneohe Elementary, who also was a poster contest winner.
Other poster winners include Brandon J. Lovett-Au, grade 4, Aikahi Elementary; and Carrilyn Tuakalau, grade 5, Keaukaha.
Robinson also is scheduled to appear 10-11 a.m., April 8 at the Ward Warehouse stage for the Hawaii Association of School Librarians' National Library Week kick-off; and 1-2 p.m., April 9, at Hawaii Kai Public Library.
On Kauai, she will appear 4:40-5:30 p.m., April 9, at Borders Books Music & Cafe in Lihue; and 9 a.m., April 10, at Kapaa Elementary School, and 10:30 a.m. that day at St. Catherine's School.
The Nene Award is sponsored by the Hawaii Library Association's Children and Youth Section, and the Hawaii Association of School Librarians. Chair for the 2000 Nene Award Committee is Fran Corcoran, school librarian of St. Andrew's Priory.
