Minn an inspiration

SEEING the Star-Bulletin photo of Momi Minn casting her vote in the Democratic caucus brought back a flood of poignant memories for her longtime friend, Josephine Chay. Minn, she points out, is a friend of 30 years who was a party leader since John A. Burns' time and a Mug shotformer National Committeewoman from 1964-88. Now 83, Minn was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer five months ago at a time when she was taking night computer courses at Kapiolani Community College. No task was beneath her, recalls Chay. "She's swept floors and served at buffet lines at party functions as well as kept track of the financial records and performed every conceivable office task at party headquarters." Seeing Minn put her battle with cancer in the background to cast her vote, Chay comments, "It's inspiring to see her participating in spite of setbacks that would stop those less dedicated." ... THE day after the news story came out that Life magazine was suspending publication, came "a special offer for professionals." It was a free Life Worthington watch "with your introductory subscription to Life." They might as well have made it a Life-time subscription -- their's, not yours ... Let's hear it for Brad Kurtz of the Hilton Waikoloa Resort. The most recent Kona Kohala Coast news bulletin lists the head of guest services or chief concierge at eight luxury properties in the area, and seven of them are women. Brad is the only guy ...

Cookbook toast

MAUI chef Bev Gannon and her co-author, publicist Bonnie Friedman, printed out the final page of the manuscript for the chef's first cookbook at 6:30 p.m. the other day, walked a few steps from her office to her Hali'imaile General Store and plopped on two waiting bar stools. They were exhausted, but not so much so that Beverly couldn't ask bartender Tim Jones if there was a cold bottle of Dom Perignon in the house. As luck would have it, there was, and Bev just said, "Open it." The book (10 Speed Press in Berkeley) won't be out until December, but you get the idea there'll be a gangbuster celebration then ... WHETHER you're one of those people who hate it when teenagers smoke, or a teen puffer yourself, you might get a kick out of listening to a free phone message from the tobacco people. Simply call 1-800-578-7453 ... Coming to town next month for a series of performances is the Phoenix ska band, Warsaw. The band gets its name from two brothers who are part of it, Chris and Aaron Poland. They'll perform April 5 at the Wave, followed by gigs at Don Ho's Island Grill, Hard Rock Cafe, Anna Bannanas, the Blue Root, Indigo's Intimate Lounge, ending on April 15 at the Cave downtown and Breathless nightclub in Waikiki ...

Oscar time

FIRST the ballots were mishandled and delivered to voters late, then the Oscars were stolen and recovered. Dave Letterman said it was the worst disaster in Oscar history since he emceed the event a few years ago. But the Oscars will be handed out Sunday and there'll be a black-tie optional Academy-sanctioned Oscar Night America Party (one of 36 nationwide) at the Diamond Head Grill at the W Honolulu with dinner and an advanced telecast of the awards ceremony on large screen TVs for those who can't wait to see it at home for free. Cost: $100, with proceeds to benefit the Hawaii International Film Festival ...
