Wahine lose twice
Staff and wire reports
on shutoutsFULLERTON, Calif. - Pinch-runner Lisha Ribellia scored the game's only run in the top of the eighth inning as No. 2 Arizona edged No. 22 Hawaii, 1-0, in a pool play game yesterday at the Fullerton Kia Classic women's softball tournament.
The disappointment carried over to last night's first bracket-play game as the Wahine (9-8) fell to No. 12 Oregon State, 3-0.
"It was a great game (against Arizona),'' said Hawaii coach Bob Coolen. "We just didn't have enough to come back against Oregon State.''
The game went to a tie-breaker in the eighth, which puts a pinch-runner at second. With two outs, Lauren Bauer laced her third hit of the game into center field and Ribellia beat out a very close play at the plate for what proved to be the game-winner.
Wildcat pitcher Becky Lemke baffled the Wahine all afternoon, scattering four hits and striking out 14 of 21 UH batters she face.
Janelle Gonzales, the Wahine's junior ace, "had the game of her life,'' according to Coolen. She held Arizona (33-1) to five hits going into the eighth.
The Wahine failed to score in their half of the eighth as Lemke struck out the side.
UH freshman designated player Demetria Costa led the offense, going 2-for-3, including a double.
Oregon State 3, Hawaii 0: The Beavers (19-5) rode the arm and bat of pitcher Crystal Draper to victory.
Draper went the distance, allowing four hits, and belted a two-run homer.
Wahine rightfielder Tyree Woodruff went 2-for-3..
UH takes on No. 14 Iowa today.
