Turning scraps into art
Photos by Dennis Oda, Star-Bulletin
Broken can be beautiful, students at Kawananakoa Middle
School are discovering. Top, Jennifer Limos, 11, shows
the turtle tile she made, part of a school project under the
guidance of glass artist Paul Kosberg from Kauai.
Below, students gather around their "glass symphony,"
which Kosberg will fire into a 5-foot-2 by 24-inch hanging.
The tiles were created in teacher Natalie Mew's art class.
At bottom, Michael Leong, left, Kelly Tengan, Nikita Ifuku,
Mew and Reid Darcelona look for glass pieces to build
their individual tiles.

learn about the cycles of nature at the Hawaii Nature Center.
Second-graders from Kapalama Elementary got to play in
the nature center's playroom. The kids from Shellie
Yamada's and Velma Akinaka's classes learned
about the five cycles of nature: water,
nutrient, plant, gas and animal.

Nature Center's volcano slide.
