Wahine fall short

From staff and wire reports

Tapa

FULLERTON, Calif. -- The University of Hawaii softball team came up short in its seventh-inning rally last night, falling to host Cal State Fullerton, 3-2, at the Kia Classic.

The Wahine, ranked No. 22 in yesterday's poll, entered the top of the seventh, down 3-0 to the ninth-ranked Titans.

Hawaii had been held to one hit through the first six inning by freshman left-hander Jodie Cox, who struck out nine Wahine going into the seventh.

But in their last at-bat, the Wahine rallied behind timely pinch-hitting by Demetria Costa, Jennifer Tandarich and Desiree Duran.

Following a lead-off walk by senior designated hitter Dana Degen, Costa's line-drive double down the right-field line put runners at the corners with no outs.

Tandarich then clipped a Cox delivery into the ground just in front of Fullerton catcher Michelle Lehr, who could not make a play.

Freshman pitcher Sheri Oronoz then battled Cox through 11 pitches before pounding the 12th at Titan second baseman Gina Oaks. Oaks retired Oronoz at first, with Degan scoring on the fielder's choice. Duran, pinch-hitting for left Kalai Castro, then drove in Costa to narrow the margin to 3-2.

The Titans brought in sophomore reliever Christy Robataille, a right-hander, who picked up her fourth save of the season by retiring Melissa McGie and Tyree Woodruff to end the threat and the game.

No. 22 Hawaii continues pool play tomorrow against Louisiana-Monroe.

The host Titans face No. 2 Arizona. The tournament continues through Sunday's title game.
