If last night's Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener is any indication, Kamehameha is ready to pick up right where it left off last year in girls' basketball.

The Warriors, defending league and state champions and 9-0 in preseason, handled Maryknoll with relative ease, 51-31, at Damien.

"We have so many returnees it makes us much farther along than we were this time last year," Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said.

Ashley DeSilva hit two 3-pointers and a couple of free throws and Kamehameha's pressing defense forced Maryknoll into turnovers as it jumped to a 10-0 lead.

The margin was 27-14 at halftime, as DeSilva scored 12 of her game-high 19 points before intermission.

Kea Kimball scored all eight of her points in the second half to offset a Spartans rally in which they scored nine consecutive points.

Shannon Riley ignited it with a 25-foot bomb to end the third quarter. and Maryknoll managed to close to 41-29 with 5:17 left.

"We stopped having mental breakdowns, got back on defense, boxed out better," Maryknoll coach Mike Taylor said of the run. "We didn't really do anything special."

But after a Warriors timeout, Kimball scored two layups, and Kamehameha made 6-of-8 free throws the rest of the way.

DeSilva made 3-of-4 and Katannya Kapeli converted a pair.

"Kamehameha has great offensive players," Taylor said. "All of them have improved their footwork and their awareness of each other. And they look like the same wrecking machine as last year."

Maryknoll was led by senior Shayne Enright, who scored 12 points.

The Spartans, who lost their three top scorers to graduation, started three underclassmen.

Kamehameha's senior point guard Rae Self steadily directed the Warriors' offense and helped disrupt the Spartans'.

But Cockett saw room for overall team improvement.

"Turnovers were a big problem for us tonight," he said."
