Interesting facts: Hawaii participated in the Women's National Invitation Tournament once before (1992). The Wahine beat Nevada and New Mexico State before losing the championship game to UC Santa Barbara, 80-77 ... The only other time UH played at St. Mary's was Jan. 14, 1984 when Jerry Busone was head coach. The Wahine lost, 71-67 ... Hawaii is 3-6 overall in postseason tournaments ... The Gaels finished second in the West Coast Conference but were upset by Portland in the first round of the conference tournament ... The Gaels played two UH opponents, losing their season opener at Texas Christian, 62-51, and defeating visiting Fresno State, 67-48.
Game keys: The Gaels play a style similar to the Wahine on defense, using a half-court, pressure man-to-man defense with an occasional switch to a matchup zone ... The UH coaches had the game film of the St. Mary's -Fresno State game to study before leaving for the mainland ... St. Mary's has decent height and outrebounded opponents an average of nine a game. This will be a major concern for the Wahine since they have gone with a shorter lineup the last month of the season. Boxing out will be a key ... "They got big, strong post players and the Dotsy twins are very sound fundamentally,'' said Wahine coach Vince Goo. "Tracy Morris, their 6-foot-2 wing player is good inside and outside." ... If the Wahine go to their power game, they will have to adjust quickly if officials are calling charging more often than blocking. UH can't afford having starters sitting for long periods of time with two fouls, especially in the first half.
