Vulcans edge Owls,
From staff and wire reports
snap losing streakHILO -- Brandon Chaves knocked in Brian Rooke with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting Hawaii-Hilo to a 7-6 win over Rice in a Western Athletic Conference game last night at Wong Stadium.
The win snapped the Vulcans' six-game losing skid, improving their record to 11-16 overall, 2-6 in the WAC. Rice fell to 9-13 and 3-5.
The rubber game of the series was scheduled for noon today in Kailua-Kona.
Rooke had reached base on a one-out single to left, and apparently had been picked off base by Jesse Roman, the third Rice pitcher. But the throw to second by first baseman Derek Michaelis to second was high, allowing Rooke to remain alive.
Chaves then hit a 2-2 pitch just past Owl shortstop Eric Arnold into center field for the game-winner.
Rice had taken an early lead on Jayme Sperring's double and Jerry Van Noy's single in the second, but the Vulcans tied the game off Owl starter Jon Skaggs on a bases-loaded passed ball in the bottom of the inning.
UHH jumped ahead in the fourth on Ryan Peterson's grand slam, his first home run of the year, Rice matched that rally with four runs in the sixth.
The Owls had a chance to go ahead in the ninth, but a one-out triple by Arnold was wasted.
