BYUH plays UC-Davis
Special to the Star-BulletinSEATTLE -- One of the top offenses in the nation faces one of the best defenses when fifth-seeded BYU-Hawaii plays fourth-seeded UC Davis tomorrow (5:30 p.m. HST) in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regional.
The Seasiders average nearly 82 points a game and shoot 48 percent from the floor. The Aggie defense yields 62 points per game with their opponents shooting 38 percent.
"They definitely play at a fast pace and get up and down the court and it's definitely a concern of ours,'' UC Davis coach Brian Fogel said.
"We have to get it back to the way we like it and not let them dictate the tempo."
BYUH's David Evans averages 28.3 points a game. He scored 32 in Friday's upset of Central Washington in the PacWest Conference tournament.
Senior forward Jason Cox, averaging 13.7 points and four rebounds a game, leads UC Davis.
Tomorrow's winner takes on top-seeded Seattle Pacific in a semifinal Friday.
Saturday, SPU crushed BYUH, 113-59, in the PacWest Championship game.
In tomorrow's first game, defending region champion and third-seeded Cal State San Bernardino takes on sixth-seeded Cal State Los Angeles.
The winner plays the second seed, Central Washington, in Friday's first semifinal. The championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. HST Saturday.
The regional winner goes to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight March 22-25 in Louisville, Ky.
Evans honored:
BYUH senior guard David Evans was named a first-team West Region selection for the second year in a row on the Daktronics Division II All-America men's basketball team.Others on the All-West Region first-team are guards Jimmy Alapag of Cal State San Bernardino, Markus Hallgrimson of Montana State-Billings and Ron Selleaze of Cal State Bakersfield, and forward Donte Quinine of Seattle Pacific.
