Davis to David:
top this tale

ALOHA magazine went of out business not long ago, and founder and publisher Rick Davis nearly followed suit last week. He sensed he was having serious heart palpitations, and headed straight for Queen's, parking in the emergency area. "You can't park here," a hireling said. "Out of my way, I'm having a heart attack,"Mug shot said Davis. He went in and while getting treated, told the doctor that he was feeling lightheaded. That's all he remembers until he was shocked -- literally -- back into consciousness with those two stun gun-like devises you see on "E.R." He's much better now, and feels ready to go home, though friends who have always kidded him about his long renditions of stories ("This isn't a one-liner, is it?") are bracing themselves for tales that will put the incessant recountings of David Letterman's quintuple bypass surgery to shame ...

ONE great weekend of entertainment just passed, and another is coming up. Anyone who aspires to be an actor should have seen Lee Stetson, the former isle thespian, in his one-man show, "Conversation With a Tramp," taken from the writings of nature-lover and "tree hugger" John Muir at HPU. The Yosemite based Stetson will be doing a second in a series of Muir adventures there Friday through Sunday. I urge everyone who treads the boards or loves theater to see him ... And if you weren't in the sold-out houses who were dazzled by the New Shanghai Circus at the Hawaii Theatre this past weekend, you're the poorer for that also ... Coming up: Tom Moffatt's old rockers show Friday (Herman Hermits, the Rascals, the Association) and Wynton Marsalis with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra Saturday, both at the Blaisdell Arena ...

Air fare

VARIOUS airlines serving Hawaii have featured local chefs -- Hawaiian with Sam Choy and Aloha with Alan Wong -- and now Roy Yamaguchi is taking his cuisine to new heights. His Roy's Restaurant menu was the jumping off place for five celebrity chefs from around the nation to come up with new BusinessFirst cuisine for Continental Airlines. The airline's Ron Wright (hold the Wright and Wong jokes!) suggests those wanting to sample the new menu would do best to book a nonstop to New York or Houston, which serves dinner, snack and breakfast. Roy's menu begins in July ...

INCIDENTALLY, did anyone mention that when Aloha introduced its nonstop flights directly to Oakland, that city's mayor, Jerry Brown, declined to wear the lei he was presented. None of this political correctness for him, apparently ... Baseball season is upon us once again, and spring training games are underway. But already in mid-season form is Hawaii's former Italian vice-consul, Guido Salmaggi. He's already sung the national anthem at the Cincinnati Reds' home opener. Guido's 83, but there's no mandatory retirement age among aging Italian singers. Even Carlo Bergonzi is still at it ...

Not your typical Patsy

U.S. REP. Patsy Mink was showing a group of Hawaii high school students through the Capitol last week when a cop stopped her as the group was headed up the steps to the second floor. "Where do you think you're going?" the knee-jerk cop asked, adding, "You can't go in there." Mink realized it hadn't dawned on the guy that she could be a House member -- for 21 years! But she let him know in no uncertain terms and continued her tour ...
