to a rainstorm

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- First there was thunder from the University of Hawaii bats, and then from the Georgia sky yesterday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

The 19th-ranked Wahine got a homer from Kate Judd for the decisive run in a 3-2 victory over Boston College in UH's tournament opener, and then another blast from Mel McGie to start the second game against No. 9 Michigan.

But a torrential downpour, accompanied by thunder and lightning, caused suspension of the Wahine-Wolverines game in the top of the fifth with Hawaii leading, 5-3.

Weather permitting, the game will be picked up with a Michigan runner on first and no outs, after completion of UH's regularly scheduled pool-play game against fourth-ranked LSU.

"We could be playing until midnight (Saturday)," Hawaii coach Bob Coolen said. "It's raining hard now, there's thunder and lightning and there's a severe thunderstorm warning for tomorrow."

The Wahine (7-2) beat the Eagles (0-1) behind a gritty pitching performance from freshman Sheri Oronoz (3-1), who scattered eight hits and four walks in 6-2/3 innings. Janelle Gonzales got her first save by inducing the last out; she also started the Michigan game, and was still pitching when it was suspended.

In addition to her solo homer over the left-field fence in the fifth, Judd hit a single in the first game and raised her average to .406.

McGie sandwiched her homer with an RBI double against BC and a two-run double in the suspended game.

Michigan's three runs were unearned because of Hawaii first baseman Joyce Lum's error.

Still, Coolen is pleased overall.

"We're playing pretty loose," he said. "At times we make some mental mistakes. But our pitching is working well and our hitting is coming around."
