Rally scoring is
bust for ’Bows

From staff and wire reports

Tapa

LOS ANGELES -- Rally scoring has become the bane of the sixth-ranked University of Hawaii men's volleyball team.

The Rainbows are now 0-for-2000 when it comes to five-game matches, losing their fourth rally score match of the season last night in front of a pro-Hawaii crowd of 500 at North Gym.

The Rainbows fell to No. 4 Southern Cal, 15-12, 3-15, 13-15, 15-13, 15-8, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest that lasted 2 hours and 36 minutes.

"We melted in the fifth,'' said Rainbow coach Mike Wilton after his team fell to 9-4 overall, 5-3 MPSF. "The big difference was they started bringing it with their serves and we didn't.

"We've got to come back strong (tonight) and bring our 'A' game. We didn't do that tonight.''

The teams meet again tonight at 5 p.m. HST.

The Trojans, who had eight aces to the Rainbows' five, improved to 12-3 and 8-2.

Freshman Costas Theocharidis again led the Rainbows with 30 kills, hitting .392. Clay Stanley added 25 kills.

Hawaii had no answer for SC's Eli Fairfield. The 6-foot-7 junior hitter put down 40 kills, mostly on line shots.

The Rainbows dominated Game 2, hitting .647 with just one error.

"Game 2 was easy, the rest weren't,'' said Wilton. "It was close in Game 5 until they made a bunch of great blocks.

"We need to do a better job of controlling that first pass so we can run our offense. We need to get our middles more involved. Torry (Tukuafu) had good numbers but didn't get enough sets.''

Tukuafu was effective, hitting .583, but only took 12 swings. He put down eight for kills with one error.
