Figure skating compe-
tition at Ice Palace

Skate Aloha 2000 will take place March 9-12 at the Ice Palace in Stadium Mall, with 120 figure skaters from Hawaii, Canada, the U.S. mainland and the Netherlands competing in a variety of events.

Skaters ages range from 4 years old to senior adults.

The competition, sponsored by the Hawaii Figure Skating Club, will start at 10 a.m. on March 9, at 2:30 p.m. on March 10 and at 6 a.m. on March 11 and 12. Admission is free.

First shutout for Wayne

Stanford junior right-hander Justin Wayne pitched the first shutout of his collegiate career yesterday as the No. 2 Cardinal defeated Santa Clara, 1-0, in a non-conference baseball game at Sunken Diamond.

Wayne, a Punahou graduate, was dominant once again for the Cardinal, striking out 12 batters and allowing just three hits as he improved his career Stanford best pitching record to 21-1. Wayne has won his last 15 decisions.

Jerry Rice's isle tour

The Jerry Rice 127 Foundation Hawaii Tour 2000, headed up by the San Francisco 49ers' stellar receiver, is scheduled for April 21-24.

A number of other NFL players will join Rice in charity basketball, softball and golf events on four islands. There also will be a $1 million halfcourt basketball shot contest.

The schedule of events will be announced next week.

Beneficiaries of the tour will include the March of Dimes Chapter of the Pacific, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu and Maui, Easter Seals Hawaii, Imua Rehab, Friends of the Children's Advocacy Center of West Hawaii and the Hawaii Hotel Association Charity Walk-Kauai Chapter.

Seasiders romp in tennis

The BYU-Hawaii men's tennis team continued their long roadtrip with a 9-0 rout of UC Riverside.

The Seasiders, 11-2 on the season, won six singles matches and three doubles matches.

Daouda Ndiaye, playing in the No. 1 position, squeaked past Riverside's Walt Hearn, 7-6, 6-4. Eddie Merc won the toughest battle of day, coming from behind to down Kevin Singleton, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6.

The Seasiders have one more road match, against Pomona Pitzer, before returning to Laie.
