Evans top PacWest
all-star pick

BYU-Hawaii forward David Evans was the top vote-getter on the All-PacWest Pacific Division basketball team and Hawaii-Hilo guard Alan Thomas and Chaminade forward Stanley Martin also were first-team selections, the conference announced yesterday.

Evans, the nation's No. 1 Division II scorer, is a two-time all-league star.

Forwards Thomas Joyce of BYUH and Scott Kato of Hawaii Pacific were second-team picks.

UH No. 5 in volleyball

Hawaii is No. 5 in the weekly USA Today/AVCA Coaches men's volleyball poll released yesterday.

Pepperdine (10-1) is No. 1, with 15 of the 16 first-place votes, followed by Long Beach State (10-2), BYU (13-3), USC (11-2) and UH (9-3).

Women's golf workshops

The Hawaii State Women's Golf Association has received a $10,000 grant from the United States Golf Association, with the funds earmarked for a series of workshops for new women golfers.

Workshop participants will receive instruction from PGA professionals.

All workshops will take place on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. New women golfers may sign up at designated golf courses or call the HSWGA office at 589-2046 or email at hswga@juno.com.

The schedule of workshops:

March 25 at Waikele Golf Course, Oahu; May 27 at Wailea Golf Club, Maui; June 24, Poipu Bay Golf Course, Kauai; July 15 at Leilehua Golf Course, Oahu; Aug. 19 at Bay View Golf Park, Oahu; Aug. 26 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course, Hawaii, and Sept. 23 at Waikoloa Kings Golf Course, Hawaii.
