Massive musibi promises a mouthful for many.

Hilo to mold a massive
millennial musubi

Help build a mighty musubi -- a 600-pounder -- this weekend in Hilo. Stop by Saturday's FamilyFun Festival, grab a bowl of rice and push it into the 8-foot-by-8-foot musubi form designed to yield the "largest musubi of the millennium."

Students of Hilo's Hawaii Community College are building the mold, as well as giant chopsticks and a rice scoop. The food services department is cooking the rice, donated by Diamond G.

Provide your own rice and enter the Musubi Art Contest. Using no more than 2 cups of rice, create something delicious or just decorative.

The festival, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hilo Union School, is in honor of the exhibit "From Bento to Mixed Plate: Americans of Japanese Ancestry in Multicultural Hawaii" housed at Lyman House Memorial Museum, the school's next-door neighbor.

Also at the festival: Games, children's crafts, demonstrations and cultural displays, talk-story sessions with authors Lois Ann Yamanaka and Glen Grant, entertainment and a wide selection of food booths.

The festival is free; admission to the Lyman House exhibit will be $2 on the day of the event. Call 935-7393.
