Vulcans lose two to SJSU
From staff and wire reportsSAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State shortstop Gary Patchett turned two pitches into five runs yesterday to give the Spartans a 5-0 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Municipal Stadium.
The Spartans (9-3, 5-2 WAC) topped the Vulcans, 6-3, in the second game of the twinbill. Hawaii-Hilo, which won its WAC debut against San Jose State on Saturday, fell to 10-12 overall, 1-2 in WAC.
Patchett's timing was perfect against Vulcan pitcher Thomas Ford in the seven-inning opener. The shortshop drilled two homers over the 340-foot sign in left, the first a solo shot in the fifth and the second a grand slam in the sixth.
Rainbow decision correct:
The umpires made the right decision in the University of Hawaii-Cal State Sacramento baseball game Sunday, according to Bill Thurston, secretary-editor of the NCAA Baseball Rules Committee.Thurston backed the original ruling after UH officials contacted the NCAA office following the controversial decision in the Rainbows' 2-1 victory over the Hornets at Rainbow Stadium.
In the bottom of the eighth, UH had runners at the corners with one out. Danny Kimura's sacrifice fly to deep left scored Lane Nogawa for the apparent go-ahead run.
However, pinch runner Sean Takamori didn't realize the ball had been caught and headed to third without tagging up. Takamori was then tagged out for the inning-ending double play.
The Hornets claimed Nogawa's run should be disallowed.
According to Thurston, the correct rule interpretation is that Takamori was not a "forced'' out because he had the option to return to first.
