WAC softball honors
for two Wahine

The University of Hawaii women's softball team swept weekly conference honors yesterday as Melissa McGie and Desiree Duran were named Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Western Athletic Conference.

McGie, a senior second baseman, hit .500, homered, drove in two runs and scored twice in the Wahine's wins over Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade last week.

Duran, a junior left-hander, tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout against Chaminade. She is 2-0 with a team-leading 1.75 ERA.

Flanagan in swim trials

Kevin Flanagan, a Punahou School graduate, qualified for the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in August with his strong showing at the ACC championships over the weekend.

Flanagan, a senior at Florida State, finished fifth in the 50 freestyle. He also finished second in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 100 backstroke as the Seminoles placed fourth overall.

U.S. takes on Russia

Team USA challenges Team Russia tonight in the Art Of War III martial arts/fighting skills championship at Blaisdell Arena at 7:30 p.m..

The feature event is an exhibition fight by five-time world ultimate fighting champion Frank Shamrock.

As part of the Dragon Festival 2000, there also will be a special appearance by the world kung fu champion Beijing Wushu Team.

Nelson wins Nakoa title

Faye Nelson of the Big Island's Pacific Gymnastics won the individual all-around title at the 20th Luka Nakoa Memorial Invitational gymnastics meet last weekend at Kokokahi Gym.

Nelson scored a 36.4, edging out Amanda Yee (36.05), for the perpetual trophy.

The invitational, the only one of its kind in the state, is named for Luka Nakoa, a budding gymnast who died at the age of 12 on March 28, 1980, in an automobile-related accident on her way to workout.

The team award went to the Hawaiian Island Twisters, which scored 109.625 points.

HIT members include Yee, Alyssa Onaga (third place, 35.90), Keala Fujitani (fourth, 35.850), Anna Hildebrand (fifth, 35.825) and Megan Harada (sixth, 34.375).

Pate a track winner

Ron Pate, president of the Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club of Hawaii, won the 3,000 meter steeplechase event at the Saddleback College masters track meet in Mission Viejo, Calif., on Saturday. Pate was timed in 12 minutes, 34.27 seconds. He also finished second in the 800 meters at 2:19.81.
