Free Willie

Free music and free food are on the bill when Uncle Willie K celebrates the release of his new CD, "The Uncle in Me," at 5 p.m. today at Tower Records Keeaumoku.

The Mountain Apple Co. and KCCN-FM 100 are hosting the event, allowing fans to hangout with Willie and listen to the versatile performer jam on updates of his old hits such as "Katchi Katchi Music," "Makawao" and "Waterfall." He'll also be signing copies of the new CD.

Local grinds -- including kalua pig, fried poke, macaroni salad and sushi -- will be provided by Iva's Place.

‘Havoc’ in Honolulu

Local metal band Crucible will be unleashing "Havoc in Hawaii 2" tomorrow night at the Wave Waikiki and Friday at Gussie L'Amours.

Headlining the show will be Crowbar, from New Orleans, a four-man outfit known for slo-mo hardcore and low-tuned guitars. The band is about to release its seventh album, "Equilibrium."

Crucible and local band Broken Man will also perform.

Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets are available at all Tower Records, Hungry Ear and Jelly's stores, as well as Radio Free Music and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Campus Center. Proceeds will benefit Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii.

Prom fashions take
spotlight at Pearlridge

Check out the new looks in prom wear at the Liberty House annual After Hours Pearlridge Prom Fashion Show 1 p.m. Saturday at Liberty House Pearlridge.

The show, hosted by I-94 DJs Pablo Sato and Kathy with a K, will feature a special performance by DisGuyz.

The latest prom looks will be modeled by winners of the department store's Prom Model Search. The teens and their schools are: Shauna Cabel, Waipahu High; Shenri-Ann Cabison, Mililani High; Roshawyn Cabral, James Campbell High; Nohealani Cambra, Kamehameha Schools; Erin Christie, La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls; Victoria Jones, Radford High; Ashley Kato, Aiea High; Bianca Meheula, St. Francis School; Kristen Takehara, Iolani School; and Kira Teshima, Punahou School.

In addition to being the show models, the 10 winners each receive a makeover, hair styling and a prom dress as part of their prize.

Nabors to be honored

Entertainer Jim Nabors will be honored at the Hawaii Theatre's annual gala event April 28, at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental hotel.

"One SwingSational Evening," a benefit, will feature a night of 1940's style swing dancing to the music of the Willie Barton Orchestra, and Matt Catingub.

Individual seats are $175 and tables at various prices are available by calling the Hawaii Theatre at 528-5535, ext. 302.

How to get published

If you're hoping to break into the publishing world, three weekend workshops offer insight into the biz:

Bullet "How to Get Published in Hawaii": The Hawaii Book Publishers Association and the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College are presenting this one-day course from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Watanabe 112 on the school's campus.

Publishing professionals will lecture on such subjects as "Is There a Book in Me?," "How to Finish the Book," "Is My Manuscript Well Done?," "Choosing a Publisher," "Signing the Contract," "Online Marketing" and "Hawaii's Literary Marketplace."

Bring a brown-bag lunch to talk to these professionals informally. There will also be a panel discussion with authors Saleem Ahmed, Ricky Grigg, Laureen Kwock and Marion Coste.

Bullet Ko 'olau Writing Workshops: Hawaii Pacific University is hosting a celebration of small literary publications 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Representatives from Bamboo Ridge, Hybolics and 'Oiwi will be on hand, and Manoa editor and poet Frank Stewart will be the featured speaker.

A $10 donation is requested. A free breakfast and free drinks to accompany brown bag lunches will be included. Call 544-9340 by Thursday to reserve a space.

'Tango' tickets on sale

Tickets are on sale for "Forever Tango," which opens March 28 with eight performances through April 2 at Hawaii Theatre.
