James "Jimmie" Fred Bal, 83, of Kekaha, Kauai, a retired housing administrator for Kekaha Sugar Co., died Wednesday in Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital. He was born in Wailuku, Maui. He is survived by wife Mary; son Edward; hanai son Norman Lung; daughters Leimomi Crowell and Kahaunani Landfried, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Thomas E. Chang, 65, of Kaneohe, a retired federal heavy-equipment mechanic, died Feb. 19 in Kailua. He was born in Ewa Beach. Victoriana C. Gruspe, 74, of Honolulu died Monday in St. Francis Hospital. She was born in Nueva Ecija, the Philippines. She is survived by sons Amorsolo, Conrado, Gil, Melanio and Regino; daughters Brigida Teodoro, Corazon Dumulong, Dativa Layno, Estelita Cruz, Fidela Antiojo, Helen Viloria, Isidra Deguinon, Julieta Pablo and Leonora Pasion; brothers Severino and Adriano Concepcion, 34 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Saichi Ito, 72, of Kahului, Maui, a welder at Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Co., died Feb. 11 in Hale Makua. He was born in Keahua, Maui. He is survived by brother Jinshichi and sisters Masue Kimura and Kinue Whalen. Private services.

Melecio P. Javier, 88, of Honolulu, a retired maintenance person with the Waikikian Hotel, died Thursday in Honolulu. He was born in the Philippines. John "Woody" Walsh, 78, who worked for Pan Am, South Pacific Airlines and Island Holidays Resorts, died Feb. 6 in Malvern, England. He was born in Boston.
