opera performsThe Beijing Kunju Opera Theatre, high on everybody's list of favorite kunju productions, pulls into Honolulu this weekend for two performances. Kunju, called the "elegant drama" in the Chinese-opera world, combines romantic poetry, complicated music and elegant, restrained dancing.
Created in 1957 and surviving the Cultural Revolution, the Beijing Kunju Opera Theatre is winding up a 12-city tour in the United States, having already hit Germany, Japan, Sweden, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Presented by the University of Hawaii of Manoa's Outreach College, the Honolulu performances include "Stealing the Magic Fan" (featuring that rascally Monkey King); "At the Crossroads; Zhong Kui Marries Off His Sister" (described as "hilarious and acrobatic"); and "In the Garden," an excerpt from "Peony Pavilion."
Performances are 8 p.m. tomorrow and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Hawai'i Theatre. Tickets are $10, $15 and $20. Call 528-0506.
