Broadway hit play, 'Rent'
due to play Honolulu

"Rent," the multiple-award winning musical considered one of the most emotional productions ever played on Broadway, is headed for Honolulu this summer.

The musical, which in 1996 won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony awards -- Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book and Best Featured Actor in a Musical -- opens at the Blaisdell Concert Hall in August for a multiweek run. Specific dates, ticket costs and casting will be be announced later, a production spokesperson said.

The musical tells the story of young people struggling to survive in New York City while dealing with the despair of AIDS, drugs and cruelty, bolstered by love and friendship.

Memorable songs include "Rent," "Santa Fe," "I'll Cover You," "La Vie Boheme," "Seasons of Love," "Out Tonight," "Without You," "Halloween," "Goodbye Love" and "One Song Glory."

Music and lyrics are by Jonathan Larson, who died a few hours after the final dress rehearsal for the show. "Rent" opened off Broadway at the New York Theater Workshop four years ago, then moved uptown to Broadway two months later. It's still running.

"Rent" is produced by Punahou School graduate Kevin McCollum, president and chief executive officer of the Ordway Music Theater in St. Paul Minnesota.

McCollum co-produced the tours of "West Side Story" and "Man of La Mancha," starring Robert Goulet. He also co-produced the Broadway hit "Damn Yankees" and was executive producer of the feature film "Jeffrey," based on the Paul Rudnick off-Broadway hit.
