500 attend benefit
for Michael Gipson

By Harold Morse, Star-Bulletin

About 500 well-wishers attended a fund-raiser yesterday to help defray medical costs for Michael Gipson, 22, paralyzed from the chest down following a head-on collision on Kaneohe Bay Drive last Sept. 26.

As the Heeia State Park event closed, his parents, Joni and Mike Doolin, expressed gratitude for the community's support.

"We had a successful fund-raiser," Joni Doolin said, adding that she didn't have a figure on the amount of funds raised.

"We can't say enough about the aloha that this community (gave) -- from just people who don't even know us standing out in front of Safeway selling fund-raising tickets," Mike Doolin said.

A Kailua couple in the car that struck the Gipson car near Castle High School died of injuries suffered in the accident.

The Kailua couple's car crossed into oncoming traffic, striking the car driven by Gipson. Gipson's 22-year-old passenger also was injured.

Gipson's initial stay at Queen's Hospital cost more than $500,000.

Power outage knocks KHPR off the air

Hawaii's public radio station -- KHPR (88.1) -- was knocked off the air today because of a power outage that affected its transmitter on Wiliwilinui Ridge.

Michael Titterton, the station's general manager, said KHPR was forced off the air at 4:30 a.m. when its transmitter, located on top of the Koolau mountain range, lost power.

Fred Kobashikawa, Hawaiian Electric spokesman, said there is a problem with a single 46,000-volt power line that serves KHPR's transmitter.

A helicopter that was to inspect the line today had problems with a bent blade and an inspection crew was walking the line to try and detect the problem. "It could be a line down or lines touching each other that caused the power outage," Kobashikawa said.

It was not clear when the station would be back on air.

Clarification

Tapa

An Associated Press report yesterday out of Frankfurt, Germany, that ran in Hawaii Inc. gave the impression that the program "Sesame Street" was included in the sale of the Jim Henson Co. to the Munich-based media company EM.TV & Merchandising AG. The deal does not include "Sesame Street," which is produced by the Children's Television Workshop, although it does include rights to the characters developed for the show.
