Four goals by Eko Lapp and three by Alyssa Garrick led the nationally seventh-ranked Hawaii Wahine water polo team to a 10-4 victory over 15th-ranked Loyola Marymount last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. UH Wahine water
polo team on topAndrea Nishioka scored for the Wahine 39 seconds into the match. They went on to take a 6-0 lead at halftime and breeze to their fourth victory against one loss.
Dannielle Worrill led the Lady Lions (0-2) with three goals.
The UH team hits the road for a Thursday game against defending national champ USC and the 16-team UC Santa Barbara Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
Surfing off until tomorrow
Dangerous 8- to 12-foot waves resulted in postponement of the Hawaiian Island Creations Pro surfing meet at the Banzai Pipeline yesterday.Competition is scheduled to resume tomorrow, conditions permitting. There was to be no surfing today in recognition of the Presidents Day holiday.
Friday is the final day of the allocated waiting period for the HIC Pro, the fourth and final event of the inaugural $50,000 Asahi Grand Slam of Surfing. There are approximately two days of heats remaining to surf.
Keaulana longboard champ
Rusty Keaulana won yesterday's longboard surfing portion of the 6th Quiksilver Makahiki Games at Makaha Beach.Tellius Fix of the Big Island placed second in the event that featured Hawaii's top longboarders.
In tandem surfing contest, the winners were Mel Puu and Miku Uemura. Ka Mo'i Connection, steered by Greg Pavao, won the canoe surfing division.
HPU sweeps in softball
Jennifer Woodard tossed a four-hitter and struck out a career-high 11batters to help Hawaii Pacific to a 3-1 win over Chaminade in the Koolau Classic Softball Tournament at the HPU Windward field yesterday.The Sea Warriors, ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, then came back with a 1-0 win over Concordia of California to earn the top seed of today's championship round with a 4-1 record.
In the second game, Susie Shoales had a seven-hit shut out and Holly Garcia's run-scoring double in the bottom of the sixth provided the game's winning run.
In other games yesterday, Hawaii-Hilo defeated Chaminade, 5-2, and Concordia, 3-0. The Vulcans' Melanie Stranak held the Lady Eagles to seven hits in the shutout
Azusa Pacific of California, earning the second seed, had a bye into today's playoffs.
Games began at 8:30 a.m. The championship was scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
