faith and relaxation to live healthierDr. Hunter "Patch" Adams, portrayed by actor Robin Williams in a film about his life, will participate in a University of Hawaii-Manoa health fair March 15.
Helping others while he was a patient in a psychiatric ward for suicidal depression transformed Adams, who went on to become a doctor and reach his dream of setting up a free medical clinic -- the Gesundheit Institute in West Virginia.
There, he uses his "Positive Thinking" approach, advocating faith, love, humor, friendship and relaxation instead of medication and such emotions as joy, humor, love, wonder, hope, enthusiasm and sharing as positive stimulants to one's immune system.
Adams will conduct a "Joy Workshop" at UH-Manoa from 8-11 a.m. March 15. Cost is $35. Call 956-8965 to register. The workshop will include an hour of exercises, an hour of "being happy" and the rest of the time will explore the idea of living happy.
Adams also will make impromptu appearances at the "Alternative Look at Health" fair, sponsored by the University Health Services and UH Wellness Council, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the UH-Manoa Campus Center. Admission is free.
The fair will feature workshops on such topics as nutritional supplements, naturopathic medicine and Chinese medicine, as well as booths on alternative medicine, healthy foods, fruit juice and herbal teas, macrobiotic diets, tai chi and yoga.
Later that night, Adams will present "Humor & Health," a performance looking at the relationship between humor and health of the individual, community and society. The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. Admission is $8 for students, $10 others.
Tickets may be purchased at the Campus Center Ticket Office at University Health Services.
