Wahine tumble
Star-Bulletin staff
out of first placeHawaii's flirtation with first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings lasted a brief five days.
A horrible shooting percentage of .148 from the field in the second half was all it took to dislodge the Wahine from that lofty perch last night.
Meanwhile, host Tulsa was successful on 48 percent of its second-half field goal attempts and slowly pulled away from UH en route to a 54-40 victory at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Southern Methodist regained a half-game lead over Hawaii by defeating visiting Fresno State, 78-68, in overtime.
The Mustangs needed a 3-pointer by D-dra Rucker with 54 seconds left to tie the score in regulation, then rode Karlin Kennedy's 10 points to victory in extra time.
Hawaii plays its final regular-season road game Sunday at Rice. The Owls crushed last-place San Jose State, 83-37, yesterday.
The Wahine led at intermission, 21-20, but that was more the result of their solid defense. Their shooting woes were evident, .333 from the field and a very uncharacteristic .400 from the free-throw line.
And, after taking a 16-6 lead in the first 13 minutes, the Wahine suddenly had difficulty handling the ball.
The Golden Hurricane (6-4 WAC, 10-13 overall) turned two consecutive turnovers at midcourt into easy layups, which sparked a 9-0 Tulsa run and suddenly the UH lead was one point.
The Wahine never led by more than three points after that and Raylene Howard's two free throws with 14:36 left in the game gave UH its final lead, 25-24.
"We had a good defensive plan, a 2-3 zone and a matchup to change things a bit. For the most part we played pretty well on defense," said Hawaii head coach Vince Goo.
"We didn't shoot well. We had a lot of wide open shots from where we knew we would get them and didn't knock them down."
UH's .235 game field-goal shooting percentage and .500 mark from the free-throw line were the worst of the season. So were the 12 field goals made and the points scored.
The Golden Hurricane scored nine less points on their court than they did at the Stan Sheriff Center, but strong defense wasn't enough to save the Wahine (9-2, 17-6) from their second road loss.
Howard scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds to lead UH. Kylie Galloway scored 10 points.
Hawaii held Tulsa's top scorer, Lila Osceola, to four points, but Denise Wagner, Kasie Pittman and Carla Morrow picked up the slack with 16, 15 and 11 points respectively.
