Cincinnati coaching
job to Sunahara

Reed Sunahara, a former two-sport standout for Hilo High School and two-time volleyball All-American at UCLA, has been named head women's volleyball coach at the University of Cincinnati, where he has been an assistant for the past three seasons.

He succeeds Laura Alford, who resigned to become associate head coach at Cal Irvine.

Sunahara played volleyball and basketball at Hilo before helping UCLA win three national titles

He has coached for 13 seasons -- at UCLA, Toledo and Cincinnati.

Wahine break swim marks

The University of Hawaii women's swim team, ranked 25th nationally, opened the King Kalakaua Invitational meet yesterday by setting three school records at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center.

Renate du Plessis, in her first race as a Wahine, was involved with all three marks. She set a record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.72 seconds.

The Wahine 200 freestyle relay team also set a record of 1:31.74. Members of the team are Lori Thomas, Sarah Watchorn, Elizabeth Partinson and du Plessis. The 200 medley relay team of du Plessis, Melanie Zander, Thomas and Watchorn won in a record 1:41.7.

The meet continues today and tomorrow.

Gold medals for isle lifters

Brothers Kyle and Bryce Yamauchi earned gold medals in last week's National Junior Weightlifting Championships at Shreveport, La.

Bryce Yamauchi, 16, successfully defended his 47-kilogram (103.4 pound) title. His snatch of 133.1 pounds and total of 302.5 set national records.

Kyle Yamauchi, 14, also won gold in his 56-kg class. The brothers competed for Team Hawaii.

Tigers to defend Cup

Mckinley will defend its Tesoro Hawaii Cup tomorrow as paddlers from the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern and Western Division compete for the OIA Championship at Keehi Lagoon.

The Tesoro Cup is awarded to the high school that totals the highest number of points in girl's and boy's competition.

The competition starts at 12:30 p.m.

Ganbare benefit tournament

The 14th annual Ganbare Golf Tournament, sponsored by the United Japanese Society of Hawaii, will be held March 2, at the Pearl Country Club. Check-in is at 11 a.m. with a noon shotgun start.

Entry fee is $100 per person, of which $45 is tax deductible. It will have a best ball Peoria format.

Proceeds from the benefit tournament will sponsor outstanding students learning Japanese at local public and private high schools, as well as at Japanese language schools.

Among the prizes will be a $10,000 hole-in-one contest, a trip to Japan and a 2000 Honda automobile.
