Hawaii
SOME pretty important showbiz types have ties with Hawaii, but now you can add one of the largest to the list. George Lucas, creator of "Star Wars," among others, has come through with a sizable matching grant for the Jean Erdman Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides tuition for dancers studying at UH-Manoa. Lucas is an admirer of both Jean Erdman and her late husband, Joseph Campbell. Joycean scholars will recognized Campbell as the writer of "Skeleton Key to 'Finnegan's Wake'," without which the reading of James Joyce's most difficult book is nearly impossible. Lucas is in the process of relocating his Skywalker Productions far from the madness of L.A. into the Presidio of San Francisco ... Luke Skydancer?
DO you get the idea that Hawaii is going Latin next month? It was brought home yesterday with the announcement that Ricky Martin would be doing a concert at Aloha Stadium on March 26, at which time it can be ascertained if he indeed knows a song other than "Livin' La Vida Loca." Two days later "Forever Tango" brings the torrid dance of South America to the Hawaii Theatre, and that same day "Fame" opens at the Blaisdell Arena, with its share of Puerto Rican performers. By this time, Jack Cione will have already opened "Mardi Gras Follies 2000" at the Banyans at Pearl Harbor -- it opens Feb. 25. And Cecilio Rodrigues continues his Saturday night songfest at Compadres. Ole ...
DeLima takes on Hicks
YOU can have all the political infighting surrounding the South Carolina primary -- get set for some real fireworks at the Governor's Conference on Volunteerism. The conference's keynote speaker, Joe Hicks of the L.A. Human Relations Commission, espouses ignoring diversity in our communities today as a way to better get along. Nonsense, counters comic Frank DeLima, who celebrates our diversity in the islands while at the same time poking fun at it. Hicks will speak to the public Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom and DeLima will close out the conference. I don't think Hicks stands a chance ...E! Entertainment Television is back this week filming "Wild on Waikiki," which will run through March. Host Todd Newton and his crew this week talked story with Konishiki, went surfing and then shooting (at the Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club) with "Baywatch Hawaii" beauty Stacy Kamano. The crew is also visiting famous Oahu TV and movie locales, which will be familiar to mainland viewers ...
Homecoming
IT'LL be a kind of old home week for entertainers Keith and Carmen Haugen when they perform tomorrow night at the Iao Theater in Wailuku. It'll be the couple's first Maui performance in nearly 15 years, which is a bit ironic since Carmen hails from there. Joining them in performance, a benefit for United Church in Wailuku, will be Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna, a Maui group that includes Carmen's mom, Mary Sarmiento ...LOCAL writer Kathy Titchen was checking out the web page of the Lamb's Players Theater in San Diego (www.lambsplayers.org) to see photos of her daughter, Kanani, who's in the company. There she discovered that opening at the theater on April 7 will be Aldyth Morris' play, "Damien," starring theater artistic director Robert Smyth ...
