The Hawaii Pacific University women's softball team is ranked seventh in the NCAA Division II preseason Top 25 poll released yesterday.

Howard Okita's Sea Warriors were 44-6-1 last season, winning the Pacific West title before losing in the regional semifinal to eventual national champion Humboldt State.

HPU (3-1) opened the season last week with a split against No. 9 Augustana and a two-game sweep of Brigham Young-Hawaii.

HPU and BYU-Hawaii co-host the second Koolau Classic Tournament, which begins today and runs through Monday.

Games will be played at HPU's Windward Field and BYUH's field.

Joining HPU and BYUH in the tournament will be Chaminade, UH-Hilo, Concordia (Calif.) and Azusa Pacific (Calif.).

Basketball

BYU-Hawaii (15-6, 8-2) ended a nine-game losing streak to Hawaii Pacific (10-12, 4-6) with a convincing 90-69 win last Saturday in Laie.

The Sea Warriors' win streak had spanned three seasons, including a 80-69 victory over the Seasiders two nights earlier at the Blaisdell Arena.

While the Seasiders remain atop the Pacific Division standings of the Pacific West Conference, the Sea Warriors were eliminated from postseason consideration with the loss.

The Seasiders' David Evans led all scorers with 26 points.

Also on Saturday, UH-Hilo defeated Chaminade (12-11, 6-5), 78-71.

Scott Prather led the Vulcans (12-11, 6-5) with 20 points.

All four of Hawaii's PacWest teams face each other in key conference matchups this week.

Tonight, Chaminade meets HPU at the Blaisdell, while UH-Hilo visits BYUH at the Cannon Activities Center.

On Saturday, UH-Hilo faces HPU at the Blaisdell while Chaminade hosts BYUH at McCabe Gym.

Volleyball

At the Honolulu Quarterback Club annual Banquet of Champions this past Monday, BYUH's four-time All-American, Arlete Silva, was honored as the Female Sportsperson of the Year.

Silva helped lead the Seasiders to the Division II title last December.
