Star-BulletinTim Harrison was smiling after his alma mater lost last night.
Harrison played for Kalaheo when it won the 1976 Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball championship. Last night he coached Radford one step closer to the 2000 OIA title, as the Rams battled their way past the Mustangs, 46-43.
A Ram-bunctious crowd of about 1,200 saw host Radford (12-0) overcome a 37-32 fourth-quarter deficit as Kalaheo (9-2) made only 2-of-13 shots from the field in the last 6:45.
Sa Tanuvasa led the Rams with 17 points.
Radford, ranked No. 1 in the state all season, meets Roosevelt for the OIA championship Friday at the Blaisdell Arena at 7 p.m., following the junior varsity championship game between Roosevelt and Mililani.
What: Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball championship game TITLE SHOWDOWN
Who: Radford Rams (12-0) vs. Roosevelt Rough Riders (10-2)
When: 7 p.m. tomorrow
Where: Blaisdell Arena
Players to watch: Radford's Sa Tanuvasa and Roosevelt's Van Dorsey. Tanuvasa and Dorsey scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, in yesterday's semifinal wins.
In the other varsity semifinal last night, Roosevelt beat Mililani, 59-53.
All four semifinalists are in next week's state tournament.
With Radford's victory, Kalaheo's six-year stranglehold on the OIA championship came to an end. But it wasn't easy.
"This was our toughest game, right here," said Harrison, who coached with Pete Smith at Kalaheo for several seasons. "(Smith) got us to play his style of ball. I like a little more up-tempo. We've been working at being more patient in our pattern offense and I think our guys did a good job of that tonight."
Radford adjusted to a Kalaheo defense that put extra pressure on Ram point guard Jacob Avilla.
"They got me tired, and I couldn't concentrate on my shot," Avilla said. "So I knew I had to get the rest of the team involved."
Avilla ended up with only two points, but he had three assists and only one turnover.
"We had the game plan. We took the point guard out of the game," Smith said. "We just needed some help scoring. We just missed too many free throws and too many layups. ... You win games with free throws and layups."
And offensive rebounds.
Tanuvasa scored on a putback and added a free throw to give Radford the lead it would keep, 42-39, with 4:19 left.
Frank Kuresa, who scored eight tough points for the Rams, then made it 44-39 off another offensive rebound at 3:33.
It capped a 12-2 run, and at that point, the five-point lead seemed like much more, as neither team shot very well.
Kalaheo was 15-of-47 from the field and Radford was a bit better at 20-of-53.
But the Mustangs still had D.C. Daniels, who was the game's high scorer with 20 points.
He seemed to tire late in the game, however, and shot two air balls on 3-point attempts before his last bucket let Kalaheo close it to 44-41 with 2:10 left.
Radford then effectively ran out the clock, despite making only 2-of-6 free throws after going to a slowdown at 2:06.
At the end of a first half that saw 11 ties and lead changes, Radford led, 22-20, as Tanuvasa scored eight points.
Kalaheo took temporary control with a 9-0 run sparked by Daniels' fastbreak basket and two free throws. Adrian Aurelio's 17-footer made it 37-32 with 6:46 left, but Tanuvasa hit a 3-pointer 11 seconds later, and the Rams' comeback had begun.
