Shutouts rule in state soccer

The Oahu Interscholastic Association went 3-for-4 yesterday as the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Girls' State Soccer Tournament opened yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

All matches were won via shutouts, including the opener that had Kapaa edging Castle, the OIA's fifth-place team, 1-0.

Also winning first-round matches were Aiea (10-4-1), Mililani (12-1-1) and Pearl City (12-2-1).

Maja Marti's game-winner came in the 59th minute for the Warriors against the Knights.

The goal came off a free kick by Ingrid Nakamura, who blasted a long shot from the right side of the box to the left side of the goal where Marti deflected the ball off her chest and into the goal.

Aiea 1, Waiakea 0:

Na Alii's goal in the eight minute held up against the Big Island's runners-up.

Stephanie Kawamura scored on a header just past the fingertips of Waiakea goal keeper Shelley Izuno. Izuno had 10 saves to keep the match close.

The Trojans put on an offensive show against the Waveriders.

Mililani had 16 shots on goal in the first half alone, with Kealakehe goal keeper Shakti Stream stopping 14 of them.

The Trojans' only goal in the first half came at the 36:40 mark. Jolie Nitta connected with Mele French on a cross for a score into the right side of the net.

The Trojans then scored three goals in 12 minutes. Taryn Jim's corner kick was followed by goals from Jackie Matsuda and Nitta.

What was suppose to be a clear-out turned into the Chargers first goal and Pearl City went on to top the Sabers.

When a pass to Carmen Calpo was not cleared out of the zone, Calpo streaked toward the goal and shot it past Maui goal keeper Malia Ho.
